Facebook Page vs Networked Blogs App – Gaining Blog Followers
Networked Blogs, the almost official blog directory & syndication application on Facebook, offers users the ability to subscribe to, rate, comment and share blogs with their friends. I would advise any blogger to add their blog to the directory, but I would not suggest that you funnel all of your Facebook friends to it. While Networked Blogs offers some nice features and indexation in a fairly high-traffic blog search engine (2 million visitors / month with close to 1 million users), the application is too many degrees removed from both your blog and Facebook.
How to use Wikipedia for Soft Marketing
Wikipedia, the most popular community-driven authority covering almost every topic imaginable, can be a powerful marketing tool if used properly. Before you decide to write a commercial on the site, be aware that the Wikipedia community frowns heavily upon self-promotion, even banning the IP addresses of those who abuse the system. But if you have valuable content to contribute, part of Wikipedia’s online authority can be yours if you keep in mind that your submissions should be written in a completely unbiased, often technical, and authoritative style.
About a year ago, in an act of immaturity, I made a few reckless edits. Shamefully, some of them were very intentional spam. But others were an honest attempt to offer my knowledge to the community. The spam was removed almost right away (a few links to an e-commerce site). The others remain to this day, in a topic which I had almost no business writing – surgical implants. But it was the unbiased, informative writing style I used that convinced the editorial staff & community on Wikipedia that I knew enough about the topic to be considered an expert. So, as for content, keep it informative, unbiased and write with a sense of authority.
